AliExpress vs Alibaba: Test with 1 Piece, Then Scale with Bulk
AliExpress and Alibaba belong to the same group, but they solve different problems. Using both, in the right order, is the safest way to launch a product.
The difference in one table
| AliExpress | Alibaba.com | |
|---|---|---|
| Order size | From 1 piece | Usually a minimum order (MOQ) |
| Price | Retail / small wholesale | Factory price |
| Your logo / custom product | Limited | Yes (OEM / ODM) |
| Best for | Testing, dropshipping | Scaling, your own brand |
Step 1 — Test demand on AliExpress
Do not buy 500 units of an idea. Sell it first with 1-piece AliExpress orders: no stock, no warehouse, low risk. Choose a Choice product with fast delivery and a high rating. Set a test budget — for example 20 orders — and watch your real sales, returns and reviews.
Step 2 — Scale on Alibaba when it sells
When the product sells steadily, the AliExpress price becomes expensive. On Alibaba the same kind of product often costs much less per unit, but you pay for a minimum order, international freight and storage or fulfilment. Prefer suppliers that are Verified, use Trade Assurance and have several years in business.
Step 3 — Do the math before you switch
Compare profit per unit on both paths and multiply by your monthly sales. Then check how many sales it takes to pay back the first bulk order. If the difference is small, keep dropshipping — there is no need to tie up cash in stock yet.
Product Scout does this for you: search any product in the Supplier Database, enter your sell price, and the Test → Scale plan picks the best AliExpress supplier for testing and the most trusted Alibaba supplier for scaling, then shows the profit, the first order cost and the payback.
Always confirm that the AliExpress and Alibaba products are really the same item (size, material, accessories) and order a sample before a bulk order.
